Fluoride is a mineral that we appreciate at Owego Dental. It’s very beneficial for teeth and needs to be taken systemically and topically. Fortunately, we consume things every day that contain fluoride. Natural water has small amounts of fluoride, but most sources are also supplemented with fluoride.
At Owego Dental, we also explain to patients that fluoride is found in tea and some of the things we eat. Toothpaste contains fluoride, but this is considered a topical form rather than a systemic one. Fluoride is highly regarded in dentistry because it boosts our dental health and fights dental decay.
We’re proud to provide fluoride treatment in Owego to people of all ages. Adults and children should get fluoride treatments, but they’re more important in children. These treatments only take a few minutes and are completely comfortable.
We’ll calculate the right dose of fluoride for the patient then apply it using a rinse, brush, swab, or a tray. Patients are then free to go home but shouldn’t eat or drink for half an hour. This is to give time for the fluoride to work and for the teeth to absorb it. You might need a fluoride treatment every three, six, or twelve months depending on your age or dental status.
Patients who are at a higher risk of developing dental caries will need more frequent treatments. Fluoride treatments are covered by insurance policies for children, but adults aren’t usually covered. You might have to pay for fluoride treatments out of pocket, but they’re not expensive.
Fluoride treatments are considered preventive procedures. They’re used to keep teeth in good shape. There are other things that you can do to protect your teeth. Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once can go a long way in keeping your teeth healthy. You’re encouraged to find a dentist near you for regular visits and cleanings. These visits help protect your teeth and diagnose early dental problems.
